Beijing will restrict the building of large department stores this year as the Chinese capital seems to have too many already. By the end of 2005, Beijing had 136 department stores with each covering more than 10,000 square meters, among which 91 percent are located in areas within the fifth ring road. Supply appears to exceed demand. Beijing will restrict the building of supermarket covering more than 6,000 square meters in areas within the second ring road, and that covering 10,000 square meters inside the third ring road.
